What We Do at Reach Out and Read Colorado
This national organization operates in local medical settings in Garfield County to help prepare the youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and to encourage families to read together.
Medical professionals incorporate the evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups and advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and giving developmentally-appropriate books to children.
The program begins at the six-month checkup and continues through age five, with special emphasis on low-income communities.
